DO YOU want to be a landlord? Is it attractive instead of a pension or are you sick of the banks tiny interest rates on your savings? There are lots of things you need to know and many pitfalls you can avoid if you listen to the right person. This is your real life guide following how The Property Insurer’s Jason McClean would suggest getting into property investment successfully in 2015.

I am Jason McClean, the author. I have been investing in property since 2000 and currently own a reasonable portfolio of seven properties and my own residential home. I see my properties as my pension and do not put money into any pension fund.

I have not lost money on property over the last 15-years. I have come close and been happy to break even on some deals that turned sour. I have been hit by big expenses and weathered interest rates going up and now down. I have enjoyed easy mortgage access and now face a much more difficult landscape to get finance because of the Mortgage Market Review.

I’ve issued eviction notices but never evicted anyone. I’ve bought properties from friends, off-plan and in my local area and more than 400-miles away. I’ve joined property clubs and contribute in many forums. I’ve used letting agents and managed properties myself.

More than anything, because I like property, I even started a property insurance company because it interests me.

I wholeheartedly recommend property investment to everyone and anyone I meet – but only if done correctly and with eyes wide open. Accidental landlords are ticking time bombs, they either get serious or they will lose out quickly.

I own my residential property, which was my first aim of investing in other properties. I maintain I will make more money from property investments than working and after 15-years still believe that is true.
